Dunrobin Castle - Scotland

the sub hall

The 3rd Duke of Sutherland played a major part in the construction of the Highland Railway and built a private line from Dunrobin to Helmsdale.  His engine is now in British Columbia, while a coach, belonging to the 4th Duke, is on show in the National Railway Museum in York.

A steam-powered fire engine made by Shand, Mason & Co, London, and stationed at Dunrobin from 1900, forms the centrepiece of the room.  We are very lucky to have all the helmets, all the uniforms, all the axes and the complete fire engine itself together with its repair kit and log books in which is recounted the arson of the Railway Hotel in Brora at the turn of the century.
